I often check in with local businesses here in Sacramento through Metro Chamber business walks to check their temperature. While many are concerned about the impact of homelessness, the lack of parking or local regulations, I hear more and more that these businesses are no longer being found by potential customers. What used to work is no longer working for them–they are being left behind by changing customer behavior.
Customer behavior has been rapidly changing and that will continue indefinitely. Customers are searching for businesses on their smartphones at a rate of 80% or more and act upon their results instantly. Foot-traffic and chance drive-by is not longer the most effective way for a local business to be found. While many are still relying on regulars and their referrals, the wealth of information found online gives even these customers options to find competitors.
Online marketing is a mindset. Often small business owners are overwhelmed by the idea, the technology and the new customer acquisition strategy. Many do not participate even personally in social media. Their understanding of local SEO, website and online marketing is limited, and they get stuck by their mindset and lack of online marketing strategy.
This is the time to ask for help. There are local workshops, online tutorials and programs, marketing strategists and business consultants. As small business owner, they need to keep an open mind and embrace a new direction. Online marketing will be a key component for the survival of the small business for the foreseeable future.
